Em’s Place
One-To-One Performance (2019) 35 Min.
Vereinigung Bildender Künstler:innen Österreich, Wien
With Em’s Place, I draw attention to the effects and emotions surrounding class, origin, and care – in connection with the work of wom:en. As a child of a working-class father born in 1919 and a mother born in 1929 in the countryside, I am establishing Em’s Place in the heart of Vienna’s 1st district, where the first Austrian women artists association was founded in 1910 by aristocratic and bourgeois women. Up there on the top floor, having a place and being in the center take shape. At the time of Euro Pride, color-coded as a place of radical queer fem(me)ininity, I build a permeable space within a space—with a view of the sky or the roof terraces. There, I offer the one person who is my audience exclusive attention and the opportunity to reflect on their own social positioning while everything focuses on the hands as a place where class lives.
